The work was composed by Gluck in 1762 and first performed in Vienna. Considering that Gluck was of Germanic background, I was somewhat surprised that the opera is in French. All good. The pathos is bigger than any language and the music is so attractive, everything sank in gloriously sad. Eurydice was played by Andriana Chuchman and Amore was played by Suzanne Rigden, both lovely. But the heavy lifting is done by Orpheus, played by Christian Sanders, who sang strongly throughout. That noted, I thought the chorus was particularly excellent this time.
The production was directed by Amanda Testini, who brought many inventive ideas to the staging, with an effectively stylistic set design by James Rotondo. One especially successful feature of the production was the use of the scrim when it came time to encounter the underworld. This, of course, is when things get truly interesting. And everything indeed does go to hell. Really well done and enthusiastically recommended. Runs until February 28th.
